Do I have the attitudes, skills & experience ?
Attitudes
- Willing and open to change
- willing to explore issues with your mentor
- willing to receive and carefully consider feedback
- willing to be open and honest with your mentor
- willing to give time and space to reflect on the process and implement agreed actions
- committed to growing yourself, your leadership gift, spiritual development and skills
- willing to commit wholeheartedly to the mentoring process and pro-actively drive the relationship in terms of agenda and arranging meetings
Skills
Experience
- you are an ‘emerging’ leader, likely to be in your first or second full time leadership position in mission (mission meaning you are primarily working outside the church rather than involved in ministry inside the church to the congregation) Please contact us before registering if you consider yourself an emerging leader but are not in your first or second leadership position
- you are a committed Christian
Are you ready to make the commitment and start the registration process? Here is a summary:
- Carefully, prayerfully and fully completing the registration information, paying the registration fee and completing the initial e–training (the training should take about 1.5 - 2 hours)
- Arranging and participating in a mentoring session every 4-6 weeks, typically via skype or phone, occasionally face to face, when feasible [You are expected to be pro-active in arranging these sessions as they are for your benefit !!]
- Bringing your agenda to the sessions
- Giving full concentration during the mentoring sessions, including making notes of key points
- Giving time to preparing for and reflecting on these sessions
- Committing time and energy to any agreed actions arising from a session
- Responding promptly to emails from your mentor
- Promptly providing, when requested, occasional feedback to us on how things are going
- Making a minimum commitment of one year, ideally two years, although successful relationships can go on longer than this
Before you commit, just read this …
How You can make Mentoring Fail !!
- Don’t think carefully about the commitment required before you sign up
- Don’t give the commitment required. For example
- don’t give much detail on the registration form, leading to a poorer match with a mentor
- don’t give time and space to prepare for and reflect on sessions,
- don’t get round to carrying out agreed actions,
- multi-task during sessions by checking emails while your mentor is talking
- Hold back and don’t open up about how you really think and feel
- Be defensive about yourself and argumentative with your mentor
- Don’t give priority to the mentoring, for example
- don’t arrange the next session promptly
- don’t be available for planned sessions or cancel at last minute
- don’t respond to emails from your mentor
Having read all of the above, you decide the next step.
You start the registration process by creating a Mentee Account on this website, to enable you to return later, and by making your Mentee Commitment. Your username is your email address and your password should be at least 6 letters long.
Go through the 5 steps of registration once only. The 'My Profile' form can be submitted partially complete if needed. To make changes later, please login to your account, where you can update all information, notify us of changes, check your status or get support.
After clicking 'Yes I commit', please wait for the confirmation screen to load. Do not press 'back' on your browser, as this may interrupt the submission process.
